About the project
Stage two is complete, and the Westhaven Promenade has been expanded, creating an uninterrupted boardwalk from the Auckland Harbour Bridge to Wynyard Quarter.
The project opens up for the first time, a previously inaccessible place for the public to experience.
During the Waterfront Plan consultation in 2011, the promenade was the highest ranked project by the public to receive early funding. Its completion represents the achievement of a key waterfront goal to create a connected and accessible waterfront.
Construction of the Promenade – Stage Two started in 2019, stemming from the Waterfront Plan 2012 and a vision to make the waterfront edge a space for all people.
Stage two of the promenade now offers a continuous shared path along Westhaven’s foreshore. It is a long-awaited connection between the existing and well-loved stage one promenade sections which were completed in 2015.
Having this iconic infrastructure in place within Westhaven means that Aucklanders and visitors can safely walk and cycle along the water’s edge, away from Westhaven Drive.
Panuku Development Auckland worked with LandLAB to design and HEB Construction to build this new asset for Tāmaki Makaurau. The Westhaven Promenade is designed for slow-moving traffic on foot, or those on bikes or scooters travelling at a slow pace.
Berth holders on Westhaven Marina will utilise the boardwalk to get to their berths via the pier gates that feature artwork by Graham Tipene of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.
