About the project
The seawall along Westhaven's northern reclamation is being upgraded. This upgrade will improve the dissipation of wave action to protect people, infrastructure and assets from coastal flooding. It will also provide an attractive new public space along the seaward face of Westhaven Marina, accessible from the Westhaven Promenade.
What’s involved
In response to adverse weather events and king tides, causing significant inundation on Westhaven's northern reclamation in previous years, work is now underway to upgrade the seawall in that location.
While the primary driver for the project is to protect the Westhaven environment, it also presents an opportunity to:
- Enhance the waterfront area, creating an attractive and functional public space on the harbour edge, complementing the Westhaven Marina environment and Westhaven Promenade.
- Futureproof infrastructure and services in the area.
- Incorporate design and ecological initiatives through partnership with mana whenua, including increased planting and reuse of existing seawall materials.
- Improve connections to the surrounding environment, especially for pedestrians.
