About the project
Te Ngau o Horotiu (our newest ferry terminal) is the biggest upgrade to Auckland’s ferry infrastructure and passenger services in more than a century to meet Auckland’s transport needs now and into the future.
The number of people travelling through the Te Ngau o Horotiu is expected to increase by up to 50% from the 6 million people a year that currently travel through it.
Te Ngau o Horotiu includes six new ferry berths, allowing people to arrive and depart with ease via three spacious 6m wide sheltered gangways with a capacity of 250 people at a time, connecting to the new berths that move with the tide. It offers improved accessibility and operational flexibility for the multiple ferry services that use the Downtown Ferry berths.
Te Ngau o Horotiu is also beautiful, the 4m tall glass enclosure creates a space that is light, airy, and spacious. Details such as the manaia figure Te Wairere who holds the breakwater capping beam, the kaitiaki figures that welcome and farewell all users and the pattern on the canopy soffit have been created by mana whenua designers to speak to histories and futures.
Dates
Completed in April 2021 and open to the public in July 2021.
