Waitematā Station (Britomart)

About the project

The downtown Waitematā Station (Britomart) is being transformed into a two-way-through-station that better connects the Auckland rail network and will enable the entire rail network to atleast double its capacity. 

This includes building tunnels through and under the station and Queen Street to the Precinct Properties' Commercial Bay development so that trains can run in both directions through Waitematā Station (Britomart)

We’ve also redeveloped the inside of the station building (Chief Post Office building) into a more attractive, modernised transport centre, and created an enhanced and fully pedestrianised public space called Te Komititanga, on lower Queen Street between Waitematā Station (Britomart) and the Commercial Bay shopping complex.

This will better connect people to trains, ferries and buses, and provide an attractive space that leads towards the waterfront.

This station is being built as part of the City Rail Link project – a 3.45km underground rail link between Waitematā Station (Britomart) and the Western Line at Maungawhau Station.

Restoration to the outside of the Chief Post Office:

Auckland Transport have completed a full restoration of the Chief Post Office’s (CPO) façade. This included repairing and refurbishing the original Crittal steel windows and repairing, cleaning, and repointing the Oamaru sandstone façade and domes on the Lower Queen Street / Te Komititanga frontage. The Oamaru stone was also treated with a BioStat to provide longer lasting protection from mould and decolourisation.

The restoration began in March 2021 and was finished in late September 2022. The CPO building incorporates many different materials, including brick, sandstone from Oamaru, and granite from the Coromandel.

The CPO clock was removed for refurbishment in 2019 by the City Rail Link Project (CRL). Now that the façade restoration is complete, the clock has been reinstalled.

We hope that Aucklanders will join with us in celebrating the re-emergence of this treasured heritage building, which stands proudly in the heart of Auckland’s downtown.

Dates

Construction of the CRL is due for completion and handover in late 2025.
