About the project
Te Waihorotiu Station, situated in the heart of Auckland’s city centre, will serve the highest density of businesses and households in New Zealand. Located on Albert Street, with entrances on both Wellesley and Victoria Streets, the station will bring Aucklanders from all corners closer to the midtown precinct hub of employment, study, entertainment, hospitality and culture.
Underground rail tunnels will connect Te Waihorotiu Station to the new Karanga-a-Hape Station in the south and to a revitalised Waitematā Station (Britomart) in the north. Trains will run every 10 minutes to the west, east and south, and the design is future proofed for a North Shore line.
The station itself is being designed in partnership with mana whenua to reflect the unique cultural and geographical history of the neighbourhood. Planning is also underway for a future 41,000sqm tower development to be built over the top the main station entrance on the corner of Wellesley Street and Mayoral Drive.
This station is being built as part of the City Rail Link project – a 3.45km underground rail link between Britomart and the Western Line and Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station, transforming Waitematā Station (Britomart) into a through-station from a dead-end stop.
What’s involved
Tunnel construction between Waitematā Station (Britomart) and Te Waihorotiu Station is now complete, and the reinstated streetscapes above, including Te Komititanga and lower Albert Street, have been transformed into high-quality public spaces for people to enjoy. These spaces include widened footpaths, native trees, outdoor furniture, and pavement designs reflecting the thoughtful cultural narratives and heritage of the area. These improvements give city dwellers a glimpse at what the CRL footprint, including upper Albert Street and Mayoral Drive, will look like after it’s complete.
Disruptions
The Victoria Street and Albert Street intersection is currently closed to continue the next stage of CRL work.
Dates
Construction is due for completion and handover in late 2025.
