About the project
The Victoria Street Cycleway now extends from College Hill to Federal Street. At Federal Street, it connects with a two-way cycle route under construction between Federal Street and Albert Park (as part of the Te Hā Noa project).
The extension of the Victoria Street Cycleway is an interim solution until the next phases of Te Hā Noa are complete, which will eventually extend the cycleway from Victoria Park to Albert Park.
The new section closes the gap between the existing cycleway, which ends at Nelson Street, and the planned network. It was built with materials that are easier to install and replace when a full street upgrade takes place.
Adding this connection now gives cyclists a safe, direct route into midtown. The cycleway links the city centre, Victoria Park, and other key destinations.
What’s involved
The extended cycleway is a 3-metre-wide, 2-way route with raised concrete separators on the south (SkyCity) side of Victoria Street West. It has a similar look and feel to the first section of the Nelson Street Cycleway.
Dates
The first stage of Victoria Street Cycleway was completed in December 2020.
The second, and final, stage was completed in March 2025.
