Improving kerbside spaces and off-street parking areas.
Auckland Transport is looking at how to make best use of kerbside spaces in the city centre. With the City Rail Link set to open next year, these spaces need to work well for our diverse community needs - like deliveries, tradespeople, pedestrians, motorists, buses and taxis.
Why this is being done
Our city centre is transforming. The City Rail Link is set to open in 2026 and will transform the way people travel to and around our city centre. As the city centre evolves, kerbside spaces need to support:
- more loading zones for businesses and deliveries
- better access for tradespeople
- convenient pick-up/drop-off spaces
- more mobility parking
- safer and more welcoming pedestrian spaces
- smarter solutions for scooters and shared transport
The plan will include short-term actions ahead of the City Rail Link opening, as well as long-term strategies that align with key city centre plans, including the City Centre Masterplan and Auckland’s Room to Move Parking Strategy.
Shaping the future of city centre streets
Auckland Transport has talked to a range of key groups to find out what changes they’d like to see in the city centre. They helped identify issues and come up with some proposals to fix them. Most of the short-term proposals are low cost, can be implemented quickly, and could be implemented soon.
Now, they want to hear a wider range of voices, whether you’re a tradie, business owner, resident, Uber or taxi driver, worker, or shopper now’s the time to have your say.
Your feedback will be used to develop a 10-year plan called Room to Move in the City Centre – an action plan that covers kerbside spaces and council-owned off-street parking areas.
