About the project
We're completing the upgrade of this section of Tyler Street in Britomart, between Te Komititanga and Commerce Street.
The design will be similar to what we've done on Galway Street, making this street a safe shared space for people with accessibility needs, people walking, riding bikes or scooters.
This work is part of the Britomart Precinct Upgrade programme and made possible by the city centre targeted rate.
Why are we doing this work?
This upgrade is guided by the City Centre Masterplan which seeks to create a pedestrian-scale city, full of beautiful public spaces in an expanding laneway network.
This section of Tyler Street is an important connection between Te Komititanga and the Britomart precinct and will complements the high-quality network of public and shared spaces, including Te Komititanga, Commercial Bay, Galway Street, the Waitematā Station (Britomart) plaza (once complete) and Takutai Square.
What is involved
Tyler Street will be constructed in conjunction with the reinstatement of the Waitematā Station (Britomart) plaza, beginning in July 2024, and will take around 18 months to complete.
From July 2024, construction crews will mobilise and set up traffic management, fencing, and site facilities within the plaza and southern side of Tyler Street.
Construction activities will include demolition, drainage and utilities services upgrades (including Vector upgrades), tree pit construction and the construction of a temporary access route through the plaza.
Looking further ahead
Construction crews will then move to construct the northern side of Tyler Street, while continuing work within the plaza area.
Throughout the works, efforts will be made to manage traffic flow and minimise inconvenience to neighbouring residents and businesses.
Design features
The design for Tyler Street is very similar to the completed Galway Street (shown below).
The upgrade will transform Tyler Street from a road corridor to a high-quality pedestrian focused street, connecting Te Komititanga to Britomart and Takutai Square through an attractive new laneway.
Dates
Work on Tyler Street and the adjacent Waitematā Station plaza is scheduled to be completed in early 2026.
