About the project
Hobson Wharf will be the home for Luna Rossa, the Challenger of Record for the 36th America's Cup which takes place in Auckland in 2021.
What’s involved
Hobson Wharf was extended to allow the Challenger of Record's syndicate base to be built. This base was constructed on drilled concrete piles, with some encased in HDPE (high-density polyethylene) and topped by precast concrete elements allowing for a long, low-maintenance life.
A number of breakwaters (in-water barriers) were constructed to create a more tranquil environment in the Outer Viaduct Harbour, and the breakwater on the north eastern corner of Hobson Wharf protects the New Zealand Maritime Museum’s historic vessel collection in Hobson Basin.
