Investing in midtown

Public investment in the regeneration of midtown is preparing this historic hub of the city centre for the opening of the Te Waihorotiu Station (Aotea). It is also providing a platform for the public and private sectors to work together in a symbiosis, seen recently with the Downtown Programme where both sectors created complementary spaces and improved the experience of people moving effortlessly along the waterfront and into the city centre.

Here is a brief outline of the scale of public and private investment driving the re-emergence of a thriving midtown:

The Symphony Centre

Exciting commercial projects already announced include the over station development – The Symphony Centre. Eke Panuku Development Auckland is partnering with international property developer Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) who with experienced local development and project management company RCP will deliver The Symphony Centre.

The Symphony Centre will see 21 storeys of well-designed retail and high-density housing rise above midtown. As well as integrated access to Te Waihorotiu station, the development will connect to the surrounding area with laneways, offering places for people to meet and spend time.

Te Mātāwai - 139 Greys Avenue

This exciting new development by Kāinga Ora in midtown's iconic Greys Avenue combines 276 new homes built around a supportive environment to enable its residents to connect and be active members of the community.

Te Mātāwai offers its residents a wide range of services. Kāinga Ora and Kāhui Tū Kaha combine public housing with a range of services to meet the individual needs of residents. By creating a supportive environment, residents have the opportunity to build social connections within this new neighbourhood.

Auckland City Mission’s HomeGround

Auckland City Mission’s new HQ HomeGround is now open on the corners of both Hobson and Federal Streets. This development is supporting and addressing homelessness in our city. HomeGround has 80 permanent apartments for people who are experiencing homelessness. They will also have access to a shared rooftop garden, residents’ lounge, community dining room, community spaces, a healthcare centre and a pharmacy and addiction withdrawal services (detox).

OnQ Entertainment Centre

As reported, the iconic SkyWorld is being transformed into OnQ Entertainment Centre, with a planned refurbishment that will open up the entrance on Queen Street and Bledisloe Lane and rework the interior layout.

The CAB

Formerly the Civic Administration Building, The CAB, located at Aotea Square, will have 118 luxury apartments. It is reported that hallmark iconic design, generous dimensions and flowing floor plans will contribute to a sense of luxury.
